The FRED® was designed to be a slightly beefed up version of the PAF Pro® with a bit of a boost in the midrange, but the result is quite extraordinary! Harmonics appeared in the sound, which ordinary humbuckers simply do not reproduce. This is especially noticeable when playing an overdriven amp or just using a distortion pedal. In terms of power, FRED® is about the same as PAF Pro®, but due to unusual harmonics, the sound is more saturated and growling. Joe Satriani was the first guitarist to discover and successfully incorporate these features of the DiMarzio FRED® into his music and use it as the primary bridge pickup on his guitars until the introduction of his signature Mo’ Joe™ model. FRED® is very sensitive to the pickup and position of the volume and tone controls on the guitar.
