Here at ProAudioLand, we often get asked for personal gear recommendations. And while all of us here have our own particular favorites, we sometimes come across an instrument that all of us can stand behind for one reason or another. With that in mind, I would like to spotlight the PRS SE 245 electric guitar, a vintage-inspired short-scale electric that combines great style, amazing features and -- best of all -- an excellent price tag. At $659, it's hard to find a better deal out there for a guitar of this quality.

The Features

If you're the type of player who prefers the look, sound, and feel of a Les Paul as opposed to a Fender Telecaster, you'll be instantly at home with the SE 245. Featuring dual vintage-voiced humbuckers, a beveled maple top with maple veneer, “wide fat” mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard with bird inlays and versatile tone controls, this is anything but a bare-bones electric. Other features include a thick mahogany back, rosewood fretboard, nickel hardware, and a 3-way toggle switch.

The Build

Features aside, this is also one beautiful guitar, featuring the quality, craftsmanship, and looks of an electric that would probably go for a grand or more. The action, in particular, is excellent, making playing a smooth experience through and through. And while the wide neck might give certain smaller-handed players some pause, don't worry -- I'm the same and found the neck size a non-issue as I was easily able to maneuver around the fretboard without a hitch.

The Sound

Apart from great looks, the SE 245 is no slouch in the tone department either. The equipped SE 245 treble and bass humbuckers feature classic tones that equally ideal for the studio or the stage. Paired with a quality tube amp and the SE 245 is a vintage-flavored beast. Furthermore, the individual volume and tone knobs allow you to control the sound of each humbucker, making the SE a lot more versatile than it looks.
